What is a guachinche?
A guachinche is a traditional Canarian eatery, typical above all of the north of Tenerife, where the winegrower sells the wine from their own harvest along with home-cooked food: goat meat, ribs with potatoes and corn on the cob, carne fiesta, escaldón, grilled cheese or wrinkled potatoes with mojo.
When are guachinches open?
Many guachinches only open a few days a week, mostly from Thursday to Sunday and at lunchtime, and some close for a season when the wine runs out. Each guachinche's page shows its daily opening hours and any temporary closures.
Where are most guachinches in Tenerife?
The municipalities with the most guachinches in our guide are La Orotava, Santa Úrsula and La Laguna. You can also search by area of the island or by municipality.
What is the difference between a guachinche and a restaurant?
The guachinche was born to sell the year's wine from the family's own cellar: a short menu of home-cooked dishes, low prices and a family atmosphere. A restaurant has a wider menu and is open all year round.
